What is hypnosis? And how does hypnotherapy work?

The term "hypnosis" comes from the Greek word "hypnos," meaning "sleep." It does not, however, mean that it is a form of unconsciousness resembling sleep. On the contrary, it is actually a state of physical relaxation accompanied and induced by mental concentration - you are MORE aware not less, contrary to popular belief brought about by fictional TV hypnotists.
In this altered state of consciousness, also known as a trance, your body will feel at ease physically yet fully awake mentally and may be highly responsive to suggestion. Hypnosis lowers blood pressure and heart rate, even changing brain wave activity. Now I know this may sound worrisome, but it definitely is not. Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness, it enables you to open your mind to beneficial suggestions to help make positive changes in your life.
It is a unique experience for each person, the common thing being that the client is ALWAYS in control. It is NOT possible for you to do, say or reveal anything that you do not want to. It would not matter how extremely deep in hypnosis you were if i gave you the command "you will give me all your money" you would simply say to me "stop messing around i'm not here for this, stop wasting my time" - to believe anything other than this, means YOU have already been brainwashed by common myths and TV. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be under anyone else's control. Impossible meaning impossible, not meaning unlikely, or ‘in certain circumstances possible' - but actually IMPOSSIBLE! Impossible because it's actually NOT conceivably possible in any realm of reality. It can NOT happen.
While hypnotised, you will be aware of all physical sensations around you, perhaps even noticing sounds you wouldn't be aware of otherwise. How is that possible, you may ask? Think of how you feel during that time in the morning when you're half awake and half asleep - no different to that.. You can't really be bothered to be fully awake yet, because you're not really asleep anymore, you can appreciate all the comfortable feelings that go with being snuggled down in your bed. That's pretty much how it feels to be hypnotised. You're not asleep but you're not jumping around the room either. Just gently chilling out with your eyes closed.
Some people say it's like being in a daydream, or being on "auto-pilot" when you're driving a car. The mind is totally occupied by other matters even though the physical manifestations show otherwise. That is, quite simply, what hypnosis is and how it feels like.
But how does this help fix things??? Simple. As most people know, the learning state of the mind is relaxed, peaceful, and happy. It is very hard for people to learn things when they are stressed, tensed and pre-occupied. In essence, hypnosis brings an individual to a natural learning state.
Learning becomes easy for the mind because the conscious part of does not pay a lot of attention when you are hypnotised. It's a lot like when you're busy driving or watching a film, the conscious mind becomes distracted by what's going on, leaving the unconscious part of your brain wide open for suggestions and ideas to flow in. Since the conscious part of your brain is unable to intervene, argue or analyze the information, resolution and enlightenment just go straight to your subconscious where it will start to take effect.
Understandably, a lot of people have doubts and hesitations with this process. Some think that they won't be able to get hypnotised properly. Let me assure you that whatever level of trance you achieve, may it be a deep or a light one, it is the right level for you at the moment. There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis. There are different ways to go about it and they're all good.
Some people also arrogantly believe that they are too intelligent to be hypnotized - but the truth of that matter is the MORE intelligent you are the easier you go into trance- it is generally only the severely retarded who can struggle with it.
Numerous studies have proven that hypnotherapy works. It continues to be applied in order to modify a subject's behaviour, emotional content, and attitudes. Dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development have all been effectively corrected by this non-invasive technique.
